FAQs
Do you work with trade?
Karen Pearse works with designers and builders on residential and commercial projects. A trade account gives you trade pricing, discounts on samples and a direct line to our team. You can apply through the trade account link.
Can I see the materials in person?
Our showroom is at 284 Fifth Avenue in New York, and visits are by appointment only. Email us at hello@karenpearsehome.com and someone will get back to you as soon as possible to book you in.
How many samples should I order?
One is enough to see the color and finish. For natural stone, handmade tile, or anything with real variation, order two or three. That way you can see how much the veining, gloss and color shift from piece to piece, and get a sense of how the whole surface will look once it’s installed.
Samples are a flat $6.95 to ship and are final sale.
Will my order look exactly like my sample?
Not exactly, and that's the nature of the material. A sample gives you a true sense of a collection's look and feel, but stone, clay and handmade tile vary piece to piece.
How much should I order for my project?
We recommend 10 to 15% more than your measured requirement. Tiles get cut to fit during installation, edges can chip, and the occasional piece breaks. It is also worth having a little left over afterwards, because materials are produced in dye lots and color can shift slightly between production runs, so a later reorder may not match what you already have. Ordering the overage up front means the whole project comes from one lot, with spares on hand if anything needs replacing later.
Do you install?
No. Installation isn't part of what we offer, and because we ship all over the country we aren't able to recommend installers local to you. Any questions about the material itself, get in touch and we'll help where we can.
One thing worth knowing: if anything looks wrong when it arrives, don't install it. Installation counts as accepting the material as delivered.
Does my tile need sealing?
It depends on the material, and the rule of thumb is porosity. Natural stone, cement and encaustic tile, terracotta and unglazed surfaces all need sealing, and cement tile usually needs it both before and after grouting. Glazed ceramic and porcelain have almost no porosity and don't need sealing, though cement based grout generally does whatever tile sits around it.
Get in touch before you install and we'll tell you what your material needs. Your installer should confirm the right product for the application, since that depends on where the tile is going as much as what it is.
We recommend 10 to 15% more than your measured requirement. Tiles are cut to fit, edges chip, and the occasional piece breaks, and because materials are produced in batches a later reorder may not match. Ordering the overage up front means you finish from a single run and keep a little stock on hand.
How much is shipping?
It's calculated at checkout from the size and weight of your order, so you'll see the cost before you pay. Samples are a flat $6.95. If you'd like an estimate before you order, email us with the materials, quantities and your delivery address and we'll work it out. Shipping policy.
How long will my order take?
Putting an order together takes 5 to 10 business days depending on its size, then a further 3 to 7 business days in transit. All dates are estimates, so build in a little flexibility when you're planning a project.
How will I know when my order has shipped?
Once your order has been processed and collected by the courier, we'll email you with your tracking information.
Do you ship outside the contiguous United States?
We ship within the contiguous United States only, and can't deliver to P.O. boxes or APO and FPO addresses. If you're in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, email us with what you're after and your address and we'll arrange shipping and send you a quote.
My order is coming by freight. What happens?
Heavier orders are pallet packed and travel by freight. The carrier calls ahead to arrange a delivery window, and someone 18 or older needs to be there to sign. If your street is narrow or hard for a large truck to reach, tell us when you order so we can flag it. Shipping policy.
Will the driver bring it inside?
Freight is delivered by liftgate to the curb, and the driver won't carry your order inside or up stairs. Please plan for how the pallet will get from the curb to where it needs to be.
My order arrived damaged. What should I do?
Don't install it, and don't refuse the delivery. Email us within 2 business days with your order number and photographs of both the packaging and the damaged material, and hold on to everything until we've told you the claim is settled. If material is discarded before we've filed the claim, we may not be able to replace it. Full damage process.
You sent the wrong item, or something is faulty.
That's on us. Email us within 2 business days with your order number and photographs, keep the material and its packaging, and please don't install it. We'll work with you to make it right.
Can I return my order if it isn't right?
All sales are final and we don't accept returns, including on sale and as-is items. That's why we'd always rather you ordered samples first, and why we're happy to talk materials through with you before you commit. Return and refund policy.
Can I cancel or change my order?
Email us with your order number as soon as you can and we'll tell you where things stand. We can usually make a change before your order has entered processing, but once it's been processed or has gone into production we're no longer able to amend it.
What happens if something I ordered is out of stock?
We'll email you as soon as we know, and the choice is yours: wait for the incoming stock, swap for something similar, or cancel the affected items for a full refund. If the rest of your order is ready we can ship that and refund the difference.
